The Spark

SingYourJoy is an idea which came to life in January 2011.  By the first rehearsal on February 7th, 12 young adults had dared to try out the concept of a non-auditioned community chorus for people aged 16 to 29.  SingYourJoy’s aim has always been to provide a place for like-minded young people to gather, make music, and more importantly create friendships and build community.  By the time of the group’s first performances in May of that year, these 20 young people had become friends, and they were a solid crowd favourite as guest artists at “Make a Joyful Noise”.

The Seasons of SingYourJoy

SingYourJoy bases their seasons on the academic calendar year of local post-secondary institutions.  For 14 weeks in the Fall (September – December) and Winter (January – April), singers meet weekly in the beautifully restored acoustic space of Oak Bay United Church (a heritage building in the heart of Oak Bay Village, corner of Mitchell and Granite Streets).  Recognizing that our members may be new to the city, starting new careers, entering a new field of study, or just determining ‘who’ they are, SingYourJoy provides an opportunity for new friendships to grow.

Each rehearsal ends with simple refreshments (the cookies and fruit are a big hit!) and a chance for singers to catch up with each other. During our time together, we also search out opportunities to work together as a community for others.

We finish our season with a solo concert in varying locations across greater Victoria. Sharing the songs we’ve learned with enthusiastic audiences is not only great fun, but an excellent opportunity to help fund the choir’s operation.  There are no barriers to joining SingYourJoy, and this includes having no cost to sing and learn each season.  Since our inception, we have worked with over 150 young people, and many of our alumni are now based in different parts of BC, Canada, and overseas.  We trust that they take a little piece of us with them on their journeys.

Giving Back to Our Community

Since our inception, each season we have assisted Our Place Society with the creation and serving of a hot meal to their inner city family.  We have been guest artists in a fundraising concert for Louise Rose’s Good News Choir. In 2015, we gave the proceeds of our ‘extra’ spring concert to support the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) Student Refugee Program at UVic.

In Performance with Others

SingYourJoy made their national debut at the January 2013 “Epiphany Explorations” conference, thrilling the audience with their energy, enthusiasm and joy in singing together.

In December 2013, and again in December 2014, we were proud to be asked to perform at the BC Legislative Assembly, participating in “Christmas Lights Across Canada” a celebration of the holiday season.

On several occasions SingYourJoy has been asked perform in joint concerts with other local choirs. This expands our choral experience and grows our community.
